Thomas puts the point this way:”All the moral virtues that are about operations agree in the one general notion of justice, which is in respect of something due another: but they differ according to various special notions” [diversas speciales rationes) {ST I-II.60.3). The special ratio of tolerance follows from the special character of the relationship it regard, the special due it delivers, and the distinct ends that it seeks by means of this act. The relationship it regards is one divided by an objectionable difference of some sort.
