美国有研究认为，之所以许多评价中心陷入失败困境，原因大致如下。
（1） 有些评价中心失败是因为没有充分的准备与计划。有时是主试本人对于评价中心的准备性工作不够注意，有时是因为有些评价中心工作没有得到上级主管的支持，有时是因为周围人对评价中心不够理解与支持，有时是因为评价中心解决不了人力资源管理中的问题，而被人丢弃。
（2） 有些评价中心没有实施是因为准备工作过于烦琐。在评价中心准备阶段，必须进行工作分析、情境模拟调试与编制和评价员训练。 （3） 有些评价中心失败是因为评价中心的结果缺乏预测效度。换句话说，评价中心的结果与后来工作的实际绩效之间缺乏一致性。
（4） 有些评价中心失败是因为评价中心的结果被错误使用或根本不用。
（5） 有些评价中心失败的原因在于得不到高层主管的支持与帮助。任何评价中心的实施都离不开上级领导人力、物力、财力与时间上的支持与帮助。
