內在動機論的主要觀點，認為努力工作或學習的原動力，主要是來自我們內心想要追求成就（Need for competence）、想要自己作決定（Need for Self-determination），以及想要與身邊的人維持良好的關係（Need for relatedness）等需求。我們會積極投入一件工作（或學習），主要是因為這是一份有意義且具有挑戰性的工作。在工作中我們可以發現自己的潛力，證明自己很有用，而且我們可以自己決定要怎麼做，做成功以後我會很有成就感，而且我可以和身邊的人分享成功的喜悅，我也會為了願意幫助別人而投入更大的心力。
