Content date: 4-16-09
Any item that is small (pocket-sized), valuable or a cutting tool must be packaged according to the following requirements. Examples of security items are optic devices, cameras, compasses, knives, radios and watches. Packaging will vary depending on the size and weight of each product.
All packaging must be approved by the L.L.Bean Packaging Specialists.
All items must be poly bagged or boxed to protect the product from dust, dirt and damage during normal distribution handling and warehousing.
Poly bags:
•All poly bags (unless otherwise specified) must be a minimum film gauge of 1.25 mil. Any poly bags under 1.25 mil require a suffocation safety warning label and must be approved by your Packaging Specialist.
•Poly bags can be made from virgin or recycled resins. All bags must have high clarity.
•Low-density polyethylene is the preferred material.
•All poly bags must be free of any traces of formaldehyde, PVC and heavy metals. (see Restricted Substances policy).
•All poly bags must be sealed to prevent the bag from opening during transportation and handling. However, the closure should allow access to contents for inspection without destroying the usefulness of the bag. Poly bags with self-sealing, re-closable adhesive strips are acceptable.
•Pressure sensitive polyester film tape is another acceptable sealing method. The tape must be Butylated Hydroxy-Toluene (BHT) free. The minimum width of the tape should be 1/2 inch (1.27 cm). The number of strips and width of the tape required will vary with the different bag sizes and weight of the product.
•Heat sealing: If the heat seal method is used, the bag must have vent holes.
•Do not use staples. Staples are only acceptable for attaching a header card to the bag and are not to be used as the primary method of sealing the bag.
Blister Packs
•Items must be secured with appropriate plastic film and paperboard backing.
•If staples are used to secure backing, the legs must be crimped.
•Film must be sealed with no rips, tears or openings in the seams.
Clamshell Packaging
•All clamshell packaging must be PVC (poly vinyl chloride) free. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the preferred clamshell material.
Folding Cartons
•Folding cartons are acceptable for items that do not require much protection. All carton flaps must be sealed with tape or designed with tuck or locking ends.
•Point-of-sale graphics are acceptable.
Corrugated Boxes
•Corrugated boxes must be used for all items that are susceptible to damage during normal shipping and warehouse handling.
