1. Attention condition. The function of inappropriate behavior represented in this
condition is to gain positive reinforcement. This may be reinforcement in the form of social attention from another person or tangible reinforcement in the form of a preferred item or event. Often these two consequences are represented in two different conditions: one for positive reinforcement by social attention and one for positive reinforcement by a tangible reinforcer. During this condition the student has access to various activities, and the evaluator is engaged in reading or some other activity unrelated to the student. The student is not attended to (reinforced) unless the target behavior is emitted. If the function of the behavior is to gain access to positive reinforcement, the frequency of the inappropriate behavior should increase.
