Tolerance regards actions objectionable in some way, dispositions and passions that generate those actions, and persons disposed to act in those ways. Why then do I speak of tolerating actions and things} Because tolerance is a part of justice and justice regards and perfects human relations that are mediated through external actions, but also things. At times, our tolerance of another is mediated through something. So, for example, we might say that I tolerate my sister's meatloaf, and I suppose in a way I do. It is objectionable, and when she serves it I do endure it. That said, the community I share is with my sister, not her meatloaf, which means that if it was not hers, I would not tolerate it. Strictly speaking, I tolerate my sister and her cooking, not the meatloaf, even as my tolerance is unintelligible apart from that objectionable thing.
