The sign and magnitude of the slope

The sign and magnitude of the slope of a line indicate the line’s direction and steepness, respectively. The slope is positive if the height of the line increases as x increases and is negative if the height decreases as x increases. The absolute value of the slope is large if the slant of the line is severe and small if the slant of the line is gradual. The situation is illustrated in Figure 1.19.
