Theaimofthisworkwasthedevelopmentofasurgicalassistancesystembasedonaugmentedrealitytosupportjointreplacement proceduresandimplantationofprostheticknee.Imagesofthescenewerecapturedinordertodetectthevisualmarkerslocatedon thelateralsurfaceofthepatient’slegforoverlappingthe3Dmodelsoftheprosthesisandthejoint,aswellasthetoolusedbythe medicalspecialist.Withthemarkeridentification,itwaspossibletocomputeitspositionandorientationforlocatingthevirtual models,obtainingamonitoringsystemforgivingaccurateinformationabouttheprocedure.Alsoitcanbeusedastrainingplatform forsurgeons,withouthavingvolunteersorpatientsforperformingrealsurgeries;insteadtheycantraininavirtualenvironment. Theresultshaveshownanefficientsystemintermsofcost-benefitrelation,takingintoaccountthematerialsusedfordeveloping thesystem;nevertheless,theaccuracyofthealgorithmdecreasesaccordingtothedistancebetweenthemarkers.
