Case example: Daniel shared his narrative with parents and they continued to assure him that he was a permanent part of their family. Father said that hearing Daniel's narrative helped him to better understand why Daniel used drugs and “shut down” when father became angry or frustrated with him. During these sessions father also talked about his own father (now deceased), who had been a stern man who demanded obedience and with whom father had had difficulty sharing feelings. Father wanted to be a different kind of father, but said that he knew he sometimes acted the same way his father had. He asked Daniel to be patient with him while they learned together. Daniel was surprised that father did not blame him for everything that went wrong in their relationship but agreed to keep trying.
