Babakus et al. (1999) developed a research model to explore the effect of role stress on job performance and job satisfaction of 203 sales staff (58% response rate) of an international service organization using a mail-in questionnaire. Both concluded role ambiguity had a negative effect on sales performance, and job satisfaction was negatively influenced by both role conflict and role ambiguity. Babakus et al. (1999) found positive relationships between role conflict and job performance, and between job performance and job satisfaction. However, Brown and Peterson (1993) indicated no relationship existed between these variables.
