As we can see from the above three passages, only the first passage relates to the current system of three contemplations in Tiantai. From the provisional entering into the emptiness, and from emptiness exiting out into the world of provisionality, and interpenetrating both sides is the Middle Path. Note that all three passages are practices of the bodhisattvas. The idea of self-practice and transforming others is of extreme importance for Master Zhiyi. He usually uses the four siddhantas in his discourses. This is to enable his followers to practice mind-contemplation to achieve the state of ‘one-mind’ of quiescent serenity.
