However they are to be distinguished, we should begin with this fact.I will begin by distinguishing the tolerance we have considered so far, the virtue annexed to justice, from the forbearance that resides in ordinary friendships. With this done, I can distinguish both of these from the forbearance annexed to charity, to the friendship for God and neighbor that, by Christian confession, comes by God’s grace alone. Then I mix things up. I soften the distinction between the endurance that belongs to justice and the kind that belongs to love by considering (1) the effects of friendship’s love on tolerance and (2) the effects of divine charity on the naturally acquired versions of both tolerance and forbearance.
