Searle [1970] focused on Sense and Reference in his Ph. D. thesis in 1959. Hiswork is based on the conviction that anyone speaking a language is engaging in a rule-governed form of behavior. His line of thought was strengthened by trying to answerquestions like “how do the words relate to the world?” and other such questions formingthe subject matter of the philosophy of language. People do communicate, they do saythings, and they sometimes mean what they say. They ask questions, issue orders, andgive apologies. Peoples’ utterances relate to the world in ways we can describe as beingtrue or false or meaningless, stupid, exaggerated or what not [Searle, 1970].
