They showed that 1 loose stool per day occurred in approximately 75% of patients, whereas when diarrhea was defined as >3 loose stools per day the prevalence reduced to 35% and even further to 20% if defined as >4 loose stools per day. Lebak and colleagues reviewed the literature and found that diar- rhea occurs in as little as 10% of tube- fed patients if it is defined as >2 loose bowel actions per day on 2 con- secutive days. It is reasonable to adopt the classifica- tion of 3 loose stools per day, the most widely accepted definition.
