Many members of the MMP family are involved in tumorigenesis and cancer progression, but the precise function of
the various members have proven to be much more complex
than anticipated in the early phases of MMP research. This
makes their use as diagnostic and prognostic markers un-
certain and their targeting in cancer treatment demanding.
By integrating the new knowledge of these enzymes in drug
design, there is hope that new, powerful drugs can be
developed.
