The initial search was conducted using the two major databases for education publications: EDUsource and ERIC. All searches were logged in by protocol entries’ stating date and included search terms, database, and number of items found. The search results were limited to the years 2005–2015 so as to maintain a manageable and relevant cohort of articles and books, as changing circumstances in the past decade have transformed the context of GCE and the discourse surrounding it. In addition to searching the databases, we also conducted a manual, targeted search within the stated timeline using Google Scholar and World of Science (WOS) databases, which led to the addition of 39 unique articles that were absent from the original search results. In addition, we screened all included articles’ bibliographies and added nine studies to our data through this procedure.
