Taboo is the original motivation of death euphemism. The word "taboo" derives
from Polynesian. It was introduced into English in the 18`" century by Captain James
Cook. When Cook came to the islands in the South Pacific, he observed many strange
social phenomena, for instance, some objects only could be used by their leader or only
by God, but some by the common; and some objects only could be used for special
purpose, but some for general use. This phenomenon is called "taboo" by the Polynesians,
which means "holy" or "untouchable". The observance of taboo can be found in many
areas besides in Polynesia. Therefore, the word "taboo" was brought to sociology and
anthropology as a special noun for this special phenomenon. It is interpreted as one way
in which a society expresses its disapproval of certain kinds of behavior which are
considered to be harmful to its members either for supernatural reasons or because such
behavior is hired to violate a moral code.
