In the end, it is Christ’s forbearance that helps the centurion carry his sin and eventually shake off its burden.29 This is the gift that Jesus offers, or so Christians confess. Once relieved of this burden, the centurion can now participate in a relationship that his sin had severed. At one with Christ, he can now count himself, as Paul would put it, among the sons of God (Rom 8:15-17).30
