Another important text of Paul that throws light on this “mystery of redemptive suffering" is from Romans 8. The most precious gift of sonship/daughterhood which we receive from the Father, making us co-heirs with his beloved Son, through the infilling of the Holy 5pirit, requires that we be fully conformed to the image of Jesus (v. 29), not only in its pleasant aspects (receiving the strength and consolation and joy of the 5pirit), but also in the radical demands of the cross: "When we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!,’ it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him" (Rom.8:15b-18).
