A majority of Americans bom between 1957 and 1965 were raised in two-parent
families. In our sample 65.7 percent of the respondents spent their childhood years
with both biological parents. Table 5 examines the reasons why the remaining 34,3
percent did not live with both parents. Since respondents were able to list up to six
parental separations, the table lists both the first reason why a respondent changed
living arrangements and all reasons.
