Sydney Water (in Australia) encourages the reuse of stormwater and grey water in addition to ongoing intensive water saving and conservation campaigns. The use of reclaimed water for garden irrigation is encouraged, using treated grey water or (untreated) stormwater collected in separate tanks. Sydney Water also introduced the distribution of reclaimed water in dual water supply systems, providing reclaimed water and drinking water. To ensure that the drinking water is not confused with the recycled water, it is delivered by a separate distribution system. The reclaimed water is subject to strict guidelines that limit its use to toilet flushing and outdoor purposes, such as car washing and garden irrigation (NSW Health Department, 2005). Such measures can be incorporated in new developments more economically than in existing ones in which the infrastructure has already been installed.
