Children’s gains in engineering were examined through video recordings and images, curriculumplans, teacher interviews and children’s work samples. The teachers in the intervention groupplanned specific activities for engineering for each theme. For example, as part of the weatherand water theme, one of the classrooms from the intervention group examined bridges and howrivers and different bodies of water flow under bridges. The children took a walk around the neighbourhoodto examine the historical bridges and water streams close by. Then they drew the blueprintsof their bridges in order to build a three-dimensional one. Finally, they built their bridgesusing different sizes of wooden tongue depressors (Figures 3 and 4).
