There is a long tradition of incorporating ecological measures into integrated urban water management (IUWM) in Lodz. Some impoundments were created in natural sections of rivers within parks and in suburbs, working both as stormwater retention and recreational areas. One of the major activities has been a ‘Small Impoundment’ project of the City of Lodz Office, operating since 1997. This activity started valid discussions on the importance of integrating urban water management with aquatic habitats restoration and Adaptive Environmental Assessment and Management (Holling, 1995) in the future development of the City. Since 2000, complex analyses have been conducted as General Projects for River and Stormwater management, developed for each river.
