The ability to accelerate is critical in all sports that require running for locomotion. Given this fact, more attention needs to be placed on training athletes to accelerate smoothly and effectively. Although many training programs focus on reaction time, first-step quickness, agility and maximal velocity, acceleration is the vital quality that must be in place for athletes to succeed in their sport. Acceleration must be developed throughout the training year. Many coaches believe that an athlete cannot accelerate until the proper strength work is in place. Under this philosophy a significant portion of valuable training time will be lost. Acceleration helps develop the strength, power, coordination and elasticity required for improvement. It is the most specific activity an athlete can do to improve acceleration.
