The present controlled study investigated systemic effects of violet laser technology with respect to skin surface temperature distribution changes near an acupoint (Dazhui) and at a “far field” area (Zhiyang). A number of studies examining temperature in connection with acupuncture have been documented in the literature. A review article on this topic was published by our research group in 2006.The technology of infrared imaging has improved significantly over the last several years. The accuracy by which temperature changes can be measured has improved by a factor of >100 compared with techniques used in past investigations. Many applications of infrared thermal imaging are reported in the literature. The basic measurement involves skin temperature distribution resulting from a variety of internal and external conditions affecting the blood circulation and metabolic processes. Therefore, there exists a nonspecificity in the process; thermal imaging can only be used as an adjunct tool. It can show surface temperature effects, but does not explainthe underlying mechanisms.
