Servant leaders also act as stewards (van Dierendonck, 2011). They are willing to take on responsibility for the entire organization, by putting the interests of followers and the organization over and above their own self-interests. Furthermore, by acting as role models and caretakers, servant leaders set an example for followers by inspiring others to act in the common interests of all. Servant leaders also demonstrate authenticity by being true to oneself, both in public and in private. Being authentic is about expressing oneself in ways that are consistent with inner feelings and thoughts. By demonstrating authenticity, servant leaders are doing what is promised, being visible within the organization, and are leading with honesty (Russell & Stone, 2002) and vulnerability (Luthans & Avolio, 2003). Authenticity within the context of an organization indicates a leader behaves in such a way that the professional role of the leader remains secondary to the primary role of the individual as a person (van Dierendonck, 2011).
