As a teacher at this college, the researcher of the present study is responsible for teaching several English courses. For theexperiment, students enrolled in the course of College English Book II (an obligatory course for first-year students) were taken as thetarget population, and the participants were randomly chosen from this population. Group A (35 males, 25 females) adopted theforfeit-or-prize game reward pattern, Group B (35 males, 25 females) applied the prize-only pattern, and Group C (34 males, 26females) received the no-prize-no-forfeit pattern
