Key messages• There is limited research on interventions for parents with an intellectual disability.• This article reviewed those designed to improve social relationships and parenting skills.• Some positive changes in social relationships were found but the generalizability of the results were restricted by study design limitations.• Behavioural based interventions were found to be more effective in parental skills teaching than less intensive interventions.• Further larger-scale, controlled studies are needed in this area to provide a more robust evidence base.
