In some circumstances, the father/ son relationship will fade into the background, its norms put aside, and the natural friendship perfected by grace will determine my actions. In other circumstances, those roles and norms will retain their purchase and so too my natural loves and their precepts. I will tolerate his objectionable differences because he is owed this endurance from his father, because I love him and hope to retain and deepen our union, and because (by grace) I love God and all those who belong to God, my son included, and I hope that my patient endurance of his difference will be received by him (with God’s assistance) as a recapitulation of that love.
