Shirking on the part of (very) highly paid sports figures is fodder for many a barroom conversation. Beyond the anecdotes, Krautmann and Donley (2009) systematically report evidence of shirking in Major League Baseball (MLB). Specifically, they find that “players signing multi-year contracts create less value than they were expected to generate” (p. 292). However, Dusty Baker’s actions towards Brandon Phillips suggest that such shirking may be infectious; that behavior such as Phillips’ may spill over to the performance of teammates.
