Previous studies showed that occlusal complications appear in patients treated with either external
or internal fixation.
In this study, we found a good
occlusal relationship in all patients, which may have
been due to the preservation of most displaced fragments, producing a continuous mandible with better stability.
Previous studies also showed that it is necessary to
reduce the comminuted fragments to an anatomic position to restore proper facial proportions and symmetry when substantial displacement is present.
However, when closed fixation or microplate fixation
is used, although the teeth remain in occlusion, facial
widening or other deformities will appear because of
rotation of the mandibular segments.
