The guidelines we have provided thus far have mostly focused on specific parts of questions, but we want to end this chapter by cautioning that one should not get consumed with a single part of a question at the expense of considering how all the parts fit together as an overall measurement stimulus. That is, one should take a holistic approach and make sure all parts of the question communicate a consistent message. The question stem has to clearly state the response task and the response format and/or options provided, in addition to any instructions, and must match the task as it is stated in the question stem. Figure 5.20 shows several examples of questions that are not holistically designed. Before reading further, see if you can find the problem with each one.
