Ceiling: these should be fire resistant, smooth, durable, light coloured, coved at the join with the walls and must be easy to clean. Suspended ceilings are preferred as pipes and services are covered. There must be access for pest inspection and control.
Walls: internal walls should be of a solid construction so as not to allow harbour for pests. They should be smooth, durable, light-coloured, non-flaking, easy to clean and maintain, chemical and grease resistant and capable of withstanding heat and moisture.
Floor: these should be non-slip, durable, non-absorbent, without crevicees and resistant to acid, grease and salt and should allow for a slope in order that liquids can drain to a trap or gully. Vinyl sheet, slip-resistant tiles and epoxy resin are examples of suitable floor coverings. Wooden floors are unacceptable.

Windows and Doors: windows, where possible,should be positioned on north-faaacing walls to minimise heat gain. Windows that open must be fitted with washable, well-fitting fly screens. Doors should be tight fitting and self closing. External doors should be pest-proofed and have metal kick-plates to prevent gnawing by rodents.
