Table 1 presents comparisons of patient characteristicsand health outcomes between 30-day unplanned readmissionepisodes and other admission episodes. Patientswith unplanned readmission were significantly older(mean age 75 years; SD 14.6 years, p < 0.001), and weremore likely to be male (53.7%, p < 0.001), to receivepublic assistance (44.3%, p < 0.001), and to live in anelderly care home (34.6%, p < 0.001). The mortality rateof unplanned readmissions was 8.9% and the mean LOSwas 6.6 days (SD 9.8 days). Both the mortality rate andmean LOS for unplanned readmissions were statisticallysignificant higher and longer than all other admissions(p < 0.001). The readmission rates were also significantlydifferent (p < 0.001) in different clusters, with Cluster 1(16.0%), 3 (13.9%), and 7 (10.7%) having higher ratesthan the others
