The first four levels are often referred to as the need for deficiency (D-needs), and the highest levels are called growth or as demand (B-needs).<br>Deficit needs arise from deprivation, which is said to be motivated when they have not been met. Besides, the motivation to meet such demands will become stronger for longer than the time they are denied. For example, when a person travels without food and lacks material, they will become hungry. Maslow (1943) initially stated that individuals must meet lower demand deficit before the stage of development to meet the growing demand for higher levels. Although, he can later clarified that the satisfaction of a demand phenomenon is not an "all-or-none", admitted that his previous reports might have put “the false impression that a need must be satisfied 100% before the next need emerges” (1987, p. 69).
