Lazarus and Folkman (1984) defined coping as “constantly changing cognitive and behavioural efforts to manage specific external and/or internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person” (p. 141). Sport psychology research has tended to adopt this definition of coping (e.g., Hoar, Kowalski, Gaudreau, & Crocker, 2006). The view that the application of coping strategies, whether effective or ineffective, may determine the overall impact that stressors will have on performance and well-being (Fletcher & Scott, 2010; Webb, Miles, & Sheeran, 2012) has been adopted throughout this paper.
