when observed under polarized optical microscopy. Figure 3a shows the transmission spectra of the cells containing mixture II, cell A before and after UV irradiationand cell B measured by a UV/visible/near infrared spectrophotometer JASCO V-570. For the cell containing mixture II with 4.09 wt % R1011, the reflection wavelength is 910nm and the maximum reflection intensity is close to 50% curve 1. Cell A also exhibits 50% reflectance before and after UV irradiation curves 2 and 3, and its reflection wavelengthshifts from 2155 nm curve 2 to 1905 nm curve 3 as a result of the formation of the polymer network in bulk LCs after UV irradiation due to the crosslinking induced volumeshrinkage.15,16 After SLC-1717 was washed off and refilled with mixture II, we were able to observe two reflection bands in the spectra of cell B curve 4 occurring due to the differencein the pitch lengths of the polymer network and the bulk LC mixture II.
