Cognition is defined as the ability to process, sort, retrieve and manipulate information (Prigatano & Fordyce, 1986). Perception is the integration of sensory impressions into psychologically meaningful information (Lezak, 1976). Intact sensation is a necessary prerequisite for perception. Thus, patients with primary sensory impairments will of necessity have some cognitive/perceptual problems.
