Hi Ian, I’ve been thinking a lot about the accidents that employees working the night shift have been involved in during their ride home after work. I was glad to hear that we are trying to do what we can to make sure employees are safe at all times, not just when they are on the job. I am also thinking that it would be a big responsibility for anyone to have to make a determination or judgement call as to whether or not someone is fit to drive home after work because what if they decide they are OK, or the employee refuses to wait, so they let them leave and then something happens? Then the person who made the decision might have to live with the thought that someone got hurt and maybe they could have prevented it. And if the manager does decide they are too tired to drive, what are they going to do? Call a taxi, have them rest? In most cases, I think the manager is going to let them leave, and/or the employees is going to insist they are ok to drive. So, I’ve been thinking about some other ways that we could help employees who drive home after working the night shift get there safely. Here are a few ideas that I have. 1. Stop work 10 minutes earlier and offer employees tea and a little snack before they leave to increase their blood sugar and level of awareness.2. Offer shuttle transportation services for a small fee. Maybe split the cost 50/50? 3. Setup a company carpool program so that people can sign up to ride to and from work together. Those are just a few ideas that I have that might be helpful.
