Cellulose fibers were isolated from the CS as described by Tibolla et al. (2014), with somemodifications. CS was pulverized using an electric grinder (World Mix model DA 280-S; DaesungArtron Co., Seoul, Republic of Korea), followed by oven-drying at 60°C for 24 h. The dried CS powderswere then treated with 5% (w/v) potassium hydroxide solution at 80°C for 3 h under mechanical stirringto remove pectin, hemicellulose, and lignin. The insoluble residues were bleached with 1.5% (w/v)sodium hypochlorite solution at 70°C for 3 h with pH adjusted to 5 by acetic acid. This bleachingprocess was repeated three times to ensure effective delignification. The bleached fibers were repeatedlywashed with distilled water until the pH became neutral.
