In response to that oversight, by drawing from the ARI model, we assumed that thedetection of both vague and false claims as greenwashing attempts requires cognitive effort. Accordingly, we hypothesized that both vague and false greenwashing claims induce a mechanismof rational cognitive persuasion regarding the critical evaluation of the claims presented (Johar 1995; Olson and Dover 1978)—namely, perceptions of greenwashing.
