Successful adoption of new materials for 3DP requires
powders with particle sizes in a limited range; ideal powders
will possess particle sizes between 20 and 40mm (Utela et al.,
2008). Studies have also shown success with 3DP of larger
particles (Yoo et al., 1993), but our initial experimentation
utilized pre-sieved glass frit in the 20-40mm particle size
range. By using pre-sieved glass, as opposed to dry clay
bodies, we were able to smoothly transition from the
aforementioned ceramic system to the newly developed glass
system, without having to modify printing parameters such as
layer thickness.
