Although there are several shortcomings of titanium
mesh, including increased costs for screws and extraoral incisions, the use of titanium mesh shaping and fixation for the treatment of comminuted mandibular
fractures exhibits considerable advantages. It can treat
comminuted segments as free bone grafts, and this
concept is supported by experience with free calvarial onlay grafts or bone granules for the reconstruction of craniofacial defects.
When adequately
fixed, displaced bone fragments have a low rate of
resorption and infection, as well as other complications, preserving favorable mandibular morphology
and function.
