Russia (North Caucasus and South Federal districts)
The Russian and Georgian electricity systems are currently linked through a 500 kV line with a capacity of 800 MW. The line is able to carry approximately 7 TWh of electricity per year or approximately 580 GWh per month
One important feature of the Russian electricity system is that most of the capacity, including gas fired generation capacity, is more than 30 years old, has a thermal efficiency of less than 30% and is overdue for replacement
The Caucasus region of Russia is currently in deficit and imports power from other regions of Russia, as well as from Ukraine, Azerbaijan and small amounts from Georgia. Future capacity expansion plans in the
region appear to be slightly under the expected demand growth rates. Capacity deficits could expand significantly by 2015 if demand growth is at the higher end of predictions
