Steering of the pilot hole is undertaken by the steering engineer who instructs the driller to perform any required steering corrections to maintain the designed profile. The direction of the pilot hole is maintained by controlling the high side of the BHA, where no profile corrections are required the drill rod can be rotary drilled. When steering corrections are required the BHA is advanced without rotation allowing the bend in the BHA to alter the direction of the drill bit.Once each drill pipe is steered along the profile, the drill string and BHA will be rotated and the full joint of drill pipe pulled back and re-advanced back along the bore. This is undertaken to ensure all of the drill cuttings are suspended in the drilling fluid for removal from the hole.A survey reading is taken at the end of each drill pipe and the details logged on to the pilot hole record sheet. Once the initial survey is complete and whilst the pilot hole is within the surface ParaTrack grid a secondary check on the downhole probe location will be undertaken.The surface grid will be charged with an AC current. The survey probe is able to detect the induced current and reports its position within the surface grid. This data is compared to the initial survey reading thereby providing a secondary check on the pilot hole location.Once the survey readings are complete, the drill string will be ‘broken’ and another drill pipe added on the rig. The wireline connection is cut and remade as every joint of drill pipe is added.The procedure for breaking and remaking the wireline connection is as follows:• The drill pipe tool joint will be unscrewed and the wire line cut leaving sufficient spare to make the next connection;• Drillpipewiththewirelinepre-installedwillbemovedontotherigfloor;• Thewirelineconnectionsaremadeusingametalwirecrimp,withacableshrink sleeve(sealed with the application of a hot air blower) the joint is then tape wrapped;• Ahandpulltestandvisualinspectionisundertakenoneachwirelineconnectionto check the joint is sealed,• Once the wireline connection is complete the drill pipe tool joint will be fastened and torqued up allowing drilling operation store-commence.
