The most common attachment technique for performing con-
ventional repair is welding. These techniques usually include welding of a cover plate to the damaged area after performing
general clean-up and preventative measures. Unfortunately,
welded cover-plates pose several problems, such as the need for
heavy machinery, sensitivity of the welded detail to fatigue, and
the possibility of galvanic corrosion between the welded plate,
existing members, and attachment materials.
