This study was designed to clarify and explain the factors underlying older people’s volunteer decision making. The study aimed to develop an alternative approach based on a revised TPV – to prior research investigating motivation to volunteer, and to explore the utility of the model in explaining volunteer decision making by older people, Specifically, it was proposed that , in accord with the TPV, bolunteer behavior would be predicted by the strength of intention to volunteer. In turn, it was proposed and perceived behavioral control, suggesting that the TPV would provide a better explanatory model than the TRA. In addition, it was proposed that measures of moral obligationa and behavioral norm would further improve the predictive utility of the TPV. In accord with both the TRA and the TPB, it was proposed that the effects of the background variables- demographic and volunteer variables – on volunteer behavior would be mediated through the proposed predictors of intention to volunteer.
