ABSTRACT: Cognitiveebehavioral therapy (CBT) is a psycholog- ical treatment that emphasizes the interrelation among thoughts, behaviors, feelings, and sensations. CBT has been proved effective not only for treatment of psychological illness but also for teaching adaptive coping strategies in the context of chronic illnesses, in- cluding chronic pain. The present article provides general informa- tion on CBT, specific information on CBT for pain, as well as guidelines and strategies for using CBT for hand and arm pain pa- tients, as part of multidisciplinary care models.
