Elevated levels of MMP-1–3, MMP-7–9, MMP-11, MMP-13–15, and MMP-26 are reported in the blood, urine, and/or cancer tissue from breast cancer patients . Furthermore, strong immunohistochemical staining for MMP-1 in stromal fibroblasts has been associated with a higher rate of distant metastases. The level of MMP-2 does not seem to have any liable prognostic value, whereas strong MMP-9 expression in stromal cells has been associated with poor prognosis in several studies.
