The intact material may have homogeneous nature, but the whole rock mass is inhomogeneous on regional scale. The compositional variation, structural–geometrical defects and less homogeneous character are the major controlling factors for physical and mechanical propertiesof rock mass. The engineering behavior of rocks has been found to depend on the intrinsic properties such as mineralogical composition, cementing material, grain size and shape, texture and porosity (Behrestaghietal.,1996).The presence of discontinuities and variations of in situ stress are the external controls on rock mass behavior. Therefore, the geotechnical parameters of different rock masses have been evaluated from various empirical equations based on Q, RMR, RMi and GSI systems.
